Artist's Description

http://lynn-hunt.pixels.com
Arguably our most beautiful moth, the Luna (Actias luna) is usually found in forested areas of North America and southern Canada. The rounds spots on its wings may have contributed to the name Luna which is Latin for moon. From a distance, those spots can resemble large eyes which help to deter predators. The Luna moth can mimic leaves on the ground by remaining motionless and is nearly impossible to see when roosting in the daytime. It wingspan can reach over 4 inches. Sadly, the use of pesticides is reducing the numbers of these gorgeous features. The Luna only lives for about a week after emerging from its cocoon, which makes seeing (and photographing one) an extra special treat.
